The key to dealing with humping is to figure out why your dog is humping at the first place and give them coping techniques to help them deal with their emotions in that given situation.

Humping to seek attention

Now if your dog humps your leg, climbs on your arm to hump a lot of times it is for attention. Dogs do this because you pay attention to them, you laugh, you look at them and even telling them no can be attention to them. So the best thing to do is to remove your attention all together, look the other way and if the dog is still humping your leg walk away.

The important thing to this is to give them attention when they are doing the right thing.

Humping as puppy play

Humping is normal puppy play behavior. Puppies hump all the time. It is one of their play signals to other dogs and that is a completely normal dog behavior. One of the biggest thing though is that if your dog humps all the time in play, it can be very offensive to other dogs.

The best thing to do for dogs in that situation is to interrupt them, pull them off the other dog and tale them away just for a few seconds and let them go to play again.

Humping due to stress and anxiety

A common thing about dog that hump is that they are trying to dominate, however, this is just a myth. Most of the dogs that hump is actually very anxious if you look at their body language and their facial expression. It can actually become reflexive for the dog, whenever they get anxious they jump up and hump.

There are better things that dog can do in that situation, just give them a different type of automatic habit. Whenever they become anxious they can learn to sit.

Humping as a sexual activity

Sometimes humping can be sexual but it is usually not. Some dogs hump in objects like pillows or a favorite toy. However, if your dog does that type of humping it can be pretty embarrassing if they do this when guests are around. Go ahead and give them something else to do instead.

It may be very important to talk to your veterinarian especially if you think this may be very compulsive in nature. The vet may give you the best steps to help your dog.
